BGLX Production Services started life as Blue Giant Lighting just half dozen years ago. Since then the company, under the guidance of director Francis White-Robinson, has grown and expanded enormously. Now a fully fledged production house, BGLX services the complete needs of an eclectic mix of clientele, supplying lights, sound, AV and crew for corporate events, touring acts and one-off shows.
“I was pretty much brought up on MA consoles; my very first professional job was at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre with a grandMA1 light, which I believe is still in use!” opens White-Robinson. “When I went to university, I purchased a 2 port node and that quickly became the standard control along with OnPC. Since then, I have used a grandMA2 on numerous occasions but the company has never been in the position to purchase one. Then I heard about the dot2.”
White-Robinson visited the Ambersphere stand at PLASA Focus in Leeds and spoke to Thor Andre from the Ambersphere Technical Sales team. “We did a demo for Francis at the show which really impressed him,” explains Andre, “and then chatted on the phone about the various options that were available in the dot2 range. He went for the dot2 XL-F which is the core console plus a fader wing.”
“I was immediately struck by the ‘MA characteristics’ on the dot2,” continues White-Robinson. “If you are familiar with a grandMA2 then the dot2 functions are instantly recognisable. It is so user friendly and allows our clients to, very rapidly, get a good looking show up and running – in many of our events the window for any sort of rehearsal time is very limited. The console’s flexibility has provided us with solutions we hadn’t thought possible. For example, at a recent conference the client asked for the main room to be split in two and run as two rooms with very different looks. After programming each room on the XF, we were able to network a fader wing onto the other side of the room and allow both rooms to be run independently of what is, effectively, one desk. Our freelancers find it a joy to use!”
