Combining a cutting-edge LED technology and wireless control systems, the installation transformed the façade of a seven-floor office building into a dynamic graphic equaliser, reacting in real-time to music and the sounds of the city.
The installation featured 3,360 individually controlled LED pixels across the building’s windows, forming a giant graphic equaliser that pulsed and reacted in real-time to a playlist of Welsh music curated by BBC 6 Music DJ Huw Stephens.
Why the AX2 PixelBar?
NeonBlack selected the Astera AX2 PixelBar for its compact design, powerful light output, and built-in LumenRadio CRMX receiver. The fixtures’ wireless capabilities made them the ideal solution for a project of this scale, eliminating the need for extensive cabling while ensuring flawless synchronisation across all seven floors of the building.
“We needed a fixture that delivered both power and precision,” said Job Barker, Project Lead at NeonBlack. “After initial on-site technical tests, we deduced that Wireless, Linear LED battens would be the most suitable lighting fixture. Having worked with Astera fixtures before, the AX2 PixelBar seemed like the most obvious choice. Its compact form factor, long battery life, and robust wireless performance allowed us to realise our vision without compromise.”

Seamless Integration with Advanced Technology
To bring CYFARTALWR/EQUALISER to life, NeonBlack integrated the AX2 PixelBars with MADRIX 5 software and LumenRadio Stardust wireless DMX. MADRIX’s sound analysis features translated the music into dynamic lighting patterns, while LumenRadio Stardust transmitted sACN data wirelessly to the AX2 fixtures.
“The AX2 PixelBars picked up the wireless signals flawlessly, responding instantly to the MADRIX programming,” explained Barker. “Their ability to execute complex, synchronised light patterns across 3,360 pixels was a testament to their performance and reliability.”
The Result
CYFARTALWR/EQUALISER captivated festivalgoers, blending cutting-edge technology with artistic expression to deliver an unforgettable experience. This installation not only celebrated Cardiff’s vibrant music culture but also demonstrated NeonBlack’s ability to push the boundaries of creative lighting design.
