Using a grandMA3 full-size console, supported by a grandMA3 lite and a grandMA3 onPC command wing for video, David and the team delivered a bold and dynamic show that matched the band’s presence. In this Q&A, he shares his approach to lighting the tour, how grandMA3 helped streamline his workflow, and why the band’s trust gave him the freedom to create something truly memorable.
What particular console/software was used?
We are currently using one grandMA3 Full-Size as a main console with one grandMA3 Light as backup for the lighting, plus a grandMA3 onPC Command Wing for video. All running in Mode 3 version 2.0.
What were your inspirations when lighting the show?
Inspirations for lighting this show come from the band themselves. They’ve always trusted me to just do my thing when lighting them, and their stage presence with catchy riffs and dramatic solos have always brought me inspiration to create something to really complement their style.

How did recipes help you on this project?
I’m currently just diving into recipes as this is my first tour running 3 software. The hope is to utilise recipes more when the show transitions from our current touring system to festivals and one offs, using recipes to help create the looks we’ve been using with new fixtures and layouts that change every show.
What was something that helped your workflow?
Something that helped my workflow was the way the software allowed me to access multi-instance fixtures. By simply pushing down after selecting a group of them, it selected the next instance – making groups and layouts a breeze.
What are your top 3 grandMA3 features and why?
Top 3 features for me were firstly the Selection Grid, which really made it easy for me to create desired looks with phasers. Second would be phasers themselves. After learning how to use them, I’m finding it easier to manipulate effects than on grandMA2. Lastly, customisation. I was able to really customise the console layouts to fit my workflow and style.
