Home 5 MA Lighting News 5 Q&A With Tim Fawkes: grandMA3 in Control for The Prodigy
We recently sat down with Tim Fawkes, freelance lighting designer and programmer who recently used grandMA3 for a stunning design for The Prodigy, which we were invited down to Brixton Academy to witness in person.

Q: What particular console and software version were used?

Tim: I used a grandMA3 Full Size as the main console, and a grandMA3 light as a backup/key light. They were running software version 2.1.1.5.

Q: What did you like the most about lighting this particular show?

Tim: I like the energy of the music, the fusion of electronic and punk rock means you can really use the lighting to its fullest to match the performance.

Q: Can you explain any parts of the show that you think worked really well?

Tim: For Invaders, we have laser mapped some content of a UFO flying above the band, with laser beams emanating from it. It’s a great fusion of video, laser and lighting. We were really pleased with how good this turned out!

Q: How did recipes help you on this project?

Tim: Using cue recipes has been invaluable for hopping between festival rigs and more recently taking this show into Warehouse Project Manchester. It makes it so simple to swap or add lights. If you find that new rigging positions means the lights aren’t working as you intended, it’s just a simple case of updating the group with other lights and the programming is done!

Q: What was something that helped you workflow?

Tim: I’ve been using the MA Tools Recipe Tools plugin which helps speed up programming recipes.

Q: What are you top three grandMA3 features and why?

Tim: Firstly, Cue Recipes – the ability to scale up or down you show without the need for much thought into cloning from what to what. Secondly, MVR Import – it means no more sifting through patch sheets on the bus! Although I think next year will be interesting to see if PSR becomes a better workflow when there is an MA3 house desk. Lastly, NDI streaming input – we use NDI input from our media servers so that we can optimise the effects that we apply to the festival iMAG screens, and saves us having to set up another monitor or computer to view this.

Q: Which software feature saved you the most time?

Tim: MVR import.

Q: Who else was involved in the production?

Tim: Matt Brown – Crew Chief, Key Light and Video FX
Dan Briggs & Will Brown – Laser Geniuses / Operators
Observatory Design – Video Content
Lighting Crew – Ryan Soave & Aiden Cartmell
Video & Servers – Alex Parkin
